The Making of 2001: A Space Odyssey - Big Picture Film Club

Using online sites like IMDb I researched about:

1 - Research the key details of the film  - writer, director, date, budget, production company

2- Context - What is the context to the film?

A - in terms of Kubrick's career timeline

B - in terms of history, politics, culture - the zeitgeist. Make sure you look at the space race, moon landing and the Cold War, as well as America in the late 1960s.

3 - Genre - Explore the ideas around science fiction as a genre (what is it, where did it begin (literature and film), what are its tropes, etc)

4 - Legacy and critical reception - Look at Kubrick's legacy, and that of the film. Why is it so important? How was the film first received by audiences and critics.

5 - Auteur theory - how important are Kubrick (and Arthur C Clarke) to the making of this film? Do you consider Kubrick an auteur, and why?

6 - Technology Look at the technology that was used to make the film. How much of the film used on set models and special effects? How important is this film in the development of film technologies that were used afterwards - was it using any new technology?

7 - Narrative -  how is the story structured (think about it as being separated into three main acts - at what point is there an intermission, and how are key parts of the film in different sections. If you want to, draw a linear timeline to help you.

Recently I have come up with five ideas for my short film. In my presentation I further developed three of these five ideas. I included lots of pictures which inspired me alongside some photographers and film directors. I have now presented to my class last week, and the feedback from my class was very positive with the majority of them really liking my second idea about a homeless man and a blind home owner.   The 95th Academy Awards was a ceremony held by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on March 12, 2023, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. It honored films released in 2022. One film in particular,  swept the floor winning 7 oscars and breaking multiple records  Everything Everywhere All at Once.  Michelle Yeoh became the first Asian woman to win best actress, as Everything Everywhere All at Once dominated at the Oscars. The dazzling multiverse adventure won seven awards including best picture, director and original screenplay. Aft  Yeoh accepted her  award  she stated,"For all the little boys and girls who look like me watching tonight, this is a beacon of hope and possibilities. "And ladies, don't let anybody tell you that you are ever past your prime." Yeoh's co-stars Ke Huy Quan and Jamie Lee Curtis triumphed in the supporting actor and actress categories.
